MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Rep. Ilhan Omar was assaulted during a town hall meeting when a man sprayed her with an unknown substance. The assailant, Anthony Kazmierczak, 55, a Trump supporter with a record of felony convictions and past arrests for DUI, was arrested after the attack and faces preliminary charges of third-degree assault.

The incident occurred after Omar proposed the abolishment of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and called for the impeachment of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem in response to recent fatal shootings involving immigration enforcement officers.

Eyewitness reports noted a pungent smell in the room following the attack, though none of the attendees experienced physical reactions to the substance. Omar, speaking to reporters after the incident, stated her commitment to continue her work, declaring, I’m a survivor, so this small agitator isn’t going to intimidate me. She described herself as shaken but unharmed.

Kazmierczak's social media posts reflected extreme political views, disparaging Democrats and lauding Trump. His actions come amid increasing violence against lawmakers, with U.S. Capitol Police announcing they are working to ensure he faces serious charges to deter similar threats against public officials.

The attack on Omar comes in the wake of other recent confrontations, highlighting a disturbing trend in American political culture where public discourse is increasingly marred by threats and violence.
