UK citizens are among those affected by Thailand's recent decision to reduce the visa-free stay period to just 30 days. Previously, travelers from 93 countries, including Australia, China, and the US, enjoyed a 60-day visa exemption, introduced in July 2024 as part of economic recovery efforts following the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Thai government approved this new visa framework, which will now determine stay durations based on the specific nationality of travelers. This policy adjustment aims to address security concerns, particularly in light of multiple arrests related to organized crime, including drugs and human trafficking.

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul highlighted the necessity for this policy revision to better suit current economic and security landscapes. The change affects travelers from many countries enjoying the previous 60-day exemption, now required to apply for a visa if they intend to stay longer than 30 days. Some will still have different exemption periods depending on reciprocal agreements.

This new visa policy is expected to be implemented within 15 days of its publication in the Royal Gazette, streamlining rules that have often confused travelers concerning multiple visa exemptions.

Tourism remains a critical sector in Thailand's economy, which welcomed nearly 40 million visitors in 2019. The revival of tourism post-pandemic has seen almost 12 million arrivals this year alone. However, ongoing security issues among foreign nationals have prompted officials to tighten regulations and enhance scrutiny.
