Sudan's RSF Paramilitary Group Enters Humanitarian Ceasefire Amid Ongoing Crisis

The Rapid Support Forces in Sudan have agreed to a U.S.-proposed humanitarian ceasefire as they seize key territories, including el-Fasher. This comes amidst accusations of brutal violence and urgent calls for humanitarian aid.

Sudan's paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have accepted a proposal for a humanitarian ceasefire aimed at addressing the catastrophic conditions resulting from their siege of el-Fasher. Despite ongoing military operations and accusations of mass killings against them, the RSF seeks to facilitate aid delivery, as over 24 million people face acute food shortages in the country. The military-led government has yet to respond decisively to this truce, maintaining preparations against what they term a militia threat.

The RSF's agreement to a humanitarian ceasefire, proposed by the U.S., comes amidst a backdrop of dire humanitarian conditions following an 18-month siege on el-Fasher, with reports indicating famine in the area.

Despite the RSF's admission of individual violations, they denied allegations of mass killings while detaining personnel involved in unlawful acts.

The ongoing civil war began in April 2023, with both the RSF and the military-led government previously failing to uphold ceasefire agreements. In this context, the RSF's current proposal aims to alleviate the suffering of the local population.

UN officials affirm that humanitarian access is critical, pointing to the imminent collapse of community kitchens vital for food security, which are struggling due to resource scarcity and operational challenges.

As the government nears military readiness for continued engagement, no concrete response has been issued regarding the RSF's truce, with officials asserting their commitment to dismantling the militia.

In light of growing international pressure and human rights concerns, the UN's Human Rights Council plans to address the situation in a special session on November 14.
