Satellite images reveal the scale of flood devastation in Nepal villages

New satellite imagery has revealed the full extent of the February‑Wednesday flash flood along the Trishuli River, which was set off by a massive glacier collapse that stopped the flow of water and debris from the Himalayas.

Before and after images show villages, bridges and a hydroelectric power station heading into its calm waters. While official counts exceed 550 dead, most survivors are still missing.

The most severe damage is centred on the Nepal‑Tibet border crossing, an area captured on video as water poured over buildings and people scrambled for safety.

Vantor’s open‑data satellite imagery shows the border area washed away, corroborated by CCTV footage of the flood’s rapid surge. The flood has reached more than 2.5 km upstream, covering 100 m of the riverbed with volcanic mud and rocks.

The village of Timure lies almost fully submerged and houses perched along steep valley walls have disappeared. Further downstream, Trishuli town was destroyed in a 45 km stretch, illustrating how a single torrent can tear through a valley in hours.

Satellite images from Planet Labs also trace the glacier’s collapse. Camera footage from a drone captured the giant ice shard tipping away, carving a path that forced thousands of litres of floodwater into the valley.

Glaciologist Dr. Argha Banerjee notes that the newly formed barrier lake at the landslide’s base is still a major threat. Although the lake’s surface area did not grow between Wednesday and Thursday, it still holds dangerous amounts of water. He stresses the need for further monitoring of the drainage channel.

The damage on the Tibetan side remains unknown as foreign media cannot access the “controlled” region. Vantor’s imagery underlines the immediate need to map the area to locate the missing and rescue the survivors.

Scientists and relief organisations are now using this satellite data to pinpoint the most severely affected zones. Rescue teams concentrate on the barrier lake and flood-affected villages, as the floodwaters continue to threaten their stability and the re‑emergence of debris downstream.
