US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has characterized recent talks with Ukrainian officials as productive, while also acknowledging that 'more work to be done' remains for lasting peace in the ongoing conflict with Russia.

The discussions took place in Hallandale Beach, Florida, where Rubio met with a Ukrainian delegation led by Rustem Umerov, the country's new chief negotiator following a leadership change due to anti-corruption efforts.

Among those present were President Donald Trump's envoy, Steve Witkoff, and Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, with Witkoff set to visit Moscow next week for further negotiations.

This round of talks stemmed from a leaked 28-point US peace proposal which has drawn criticism for appearing to prioritize Russian interests. Rubio emphasized that the aim is not just to cease hostilities but also to ensure Ukraine's long-term sovereignty and prosperity.

During the meeting, Umerov stressed the need for discussions centered on Ukraine's future security and economic rebuilding, asserting that the US is working closely with Ukraine. Both sides described the dialogue as a step forward, with Rubio stating, 'we built on that today, but there's more work to be done.'

Significant challenges remain, particularly regarding the territorial disputes resulting from Russia's annexations. As ongoing diplomatic efforts continue, President Zelensky is expected to discuss Ukraine's situation with French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris.

Tens of thousands have perished due to the conflict and millions have been displaced since Russia's invasion in February 2022. The roots of the conflict can be traced back to 2014 when Russia annexed Crimea following Ukraine's political shift towards the West.
