Norway’s Crown Princess Mette‑Marit Successfully Undergoes Lung Transplant
Royal household officials announced that the 52‑year‑old Crown Princess Mette‑Marit has undergone a successful lung transplant in Oslo.
She was initially diagnosed with a rare form of pulmonary fibrosis in 2018, and her condition has progressively deteriorated, necessitating a transplant two years later.
Leading specialist Are Holm remarked that the surgery went well and that Mette‑Marit will be monitored in hospital for several weeks as is standard for transplant recipients.
Prince Haakon will adjust his official schedule to provide support and attend to her medical needs.
Another layer of urgency came after her son, Marius Borg Høiby, was sentenced to four years in prison for rape offences; the royal couple sought to secure his release to be with her.
Historian Ole‑Jørgen Schulsrud‑Hansen hailed the transplant as “very happy news for the royal family and the Kingdom of Norway.”
Earlier this year, Mette‑Marit apologized to the king and queen for a three‑year friendship with Jeffrey Epstein, admitting to “poor judgement” in a national TV interview.
