Five new suspects have been arrested over their involvement in the Louvre heist, Paris' public prosecutor has confirmed. The individuals were detained during coordinated raids on Wednesday night across the Paris region.
According to Laure Beccuau, one of the suspects is believed to be part of the original four-man team seen on CCTV during the audacious robbery. Earlier, two suspects involved in the heist had already been captured and reportedly partially recognized their roles in the theft. However, the fourth member of the team remains at large.
The roles of the newly arrested suspects in the heist are still unclear, but Beccuau indicated on French radio that they may provide valuable information on the incident.
The arrests were conducted in various locations including the suburb of Seine-Saint-Denis. Authorities recovered phones and other items from the suspects which are being examined for encrypted communications.
Those arrested can be held for up to four days before they are formally charged or released. Beccuau also mentioned that DNA evidence linking one of those arrested to the crime scene is being analyzed.
The high-profile theft took place on October 19, when four thieves broke into the Louvre and stole jewelry valued at €88 million ($102 million). The stolen items included precious crown jewels, which have not yet been recovered.
As the investigation unfolds, judicial authorities are tightening security measures around cultural sites in France. Following the incident, some high-value items from the Louvre have been moved to the secure vault of the Bank of France.
The public has been keenly following this case, especially given the sensational nature of the robbery during broad daylight, raising serious questions about museum security protocols.
