Welcome to the World of Slime Mould

These images, captured by photographer Barry Webb, provide a close-up view of single-celled slime mould organisms—perspectives that would otherwise go unseen. Using a high-powered macro lens, Barry reveals the delicate structures that thrive in various environments, from forests to deserts.

Awarded in multiple competitions, including the people's choice award at the British Photography Awards 2025, Barry primarily focuses on the regions west of London.

The Journey Into Slime Moulds

Before venturing into slime mould photography in 2019, Barry was unaware of their existence. A gardener turned photographer, he spent his time during the Covid lockdown exploring and capturing these intriguing organisms.

It's not fungi, it's not a plant, it's not animal. It's more closely related to an amoeba, he explains, as he showcases the ingredient of the ecosystem that feeds off bacteria and fungi.

Barry’s photography focuses on the striking fruiting bodies of slime mould, where color and texture create visual drama. These unique organisms have even been used for innovative applications like urban transport mapping and in the quest for dark matter.

Capturing the Moment: A Complex Process

Barry discusses the challenges of photographing such tiny organisms. Using a technique known as focus bracketing, he takes numerous photographs to ensure that every detail is in focus, compiling them through software to create a composite image that showcases the slime mould's beauty.

One picture would not do them justice—you can't capture anything in focus otherwise, Barry notes, emphasizing how far technology has come to assist in his art.

Conclusion

Barry Webb's dedication to capturing the unseen beauty of slime mould provides a window into a world that many are oblivious to. Join him in exploring the intricate balance of nature through macro photography that reveals the art hidden in plain sight.
