Rep. Eric Swalwell, a notable Democratic figure and House manager during Trump's impeachment trial, has officially declared his bid for California governor. Making the announcement on ABC's 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!' on Thursday night, Swalwell underscored his vision for a California where residents can thrive financially. 'Our state, this great state, needs a fighter and a protector,' he stated during the show. 'Someone who will bring prices down, lift wages up.' In his campaign messaging, Swalwell pointed to past clashes with Trump, indicating his readiness to combat what he perceives as an ongoing assault on California. He described the current state of California under Trump as being 'under attack,' citing issues like militarized streets and cancelled climate projects. Swalwell represented a northern California district and previously ran for the Democratic nomination in the 2020 presidential race, where he later supported Joe Biden. The upcoming gubernatorial race features Swalwell among a multitude of Democratic contenders, including billionaire Tom Steyer and former Rep. Katie Porter, all vying for the chance to succeed the term-limited Gov. Gavin Newsom.
