President Donald Trump accused six Democratic lawmakers of seditious behaviour, punishable by death after they released a video urging U.S. service members to refuse unlawful commands.
Trump expressed his discontent on social media, stating: This is really bad, and Dangerous to our Country. Their words cannot be allowed to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???.
The six lawmakers, who have military or intelligence backgrounds, condemned Trump's remarks as threats against elected officials. They replied in a joint statement, asserting, No threat, intimidation, or call for violence will deter us from that sacred obligation..
The Democrats' video, led by Michigan Senator Elissa Slotkin, included statements from Arizona Senator Mark Kelly and Representatives Chris DeLuzio, Maggie Goodlander, Chrissy Houlahan, and Jason Crow. Senator Kelly, a Navy veteran and former astronaut, reinforced that, Our laws are clear. You can refuse illegal orders. The video emphasized the responsibility of military personnel to protect the Constitution.
Trump fired back by claiming the actions of the lawmakers constituted high-level seditious behavior. He called for arrests and trials, stating, An example MUST BE SET. His posts further included suggestions that their actions warranted extreme consequences.
During a press briefing, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt denied that Trump intended to call for violence against Congress members, redirecting focus to the lawmakers' urging of military disobedience. She remarked, It perhaps is punishable by law. Nevertheless, attention is mounting on the rising political violence, as evidenced by a recent Pew Research study indicating that 85% of Americans perceive an increase in such violence.
The exchange continues amidst noticeable concerns about the ramifications of inflammatory political discourse, with safety measures being heightened for lawmakers involved.
