In brief
American R‑B singer Chris Brown received an eight‑month prison sentence that was suspended for 12 months following an assault on a nightclub patron in London's Mayfair club Tape. The judge described the repeated bottle blows to the head as ‘plainly dangerous’ and warned that such violence in a crowded venue poses a risk to everyone present. Brown and his companion, rapper Omololu Akinlolu, pleaded guilty to affray and were ordered to pay £1,500 in costs. While the judge acknowledged Brown’s guilty plea and praised his parental duties, he stressed that fame does not grant special treatment. The incident, lasting roughly 20 seconds, left the victim with head and knee injuries and sparked broader discussion about nightclub safety and celebrity accountability.
American R‑B star Chris Brown avoided jail after striking a club patron twice with a glass tequila bottle in London's Mayfair nightclub Tape in February 2023.
At Southwark Crown Court the judge imposed an eight‑month prison sentence that was suspended for 12 months, meaning Brown will remain free unless he commits another offence during that period.
Brown’s vocal coach, rapper Omololu Akinlolu, who joined the attack, received a four‑month sentence on the same grounds, also suspended for 12 months, and both men were directed to pay £1,500 in court costs.
Judge Tony Baumgartner said the repeated use of a "heavy square‑shaped tequila bottle" to hit the victim twice on the head was “plainly dangerous” and that the attack was “intense and serious.”
CCTV footage shown in court showed Brown striking the victim four times with the bottle, two hits to the head and a blow to the shoulder, while Akinlolu punched the victim’s head after joining the assault.
The victim, music producer Abraham ‘Abe’ Diaw, was taken to St Mary’s Hospital with head and knee injuries, later discharged with pain relief. An MRI in March revealed a high‑grade ligament injury in the left knee.
The judge reminded the court that the violence in a crowded nightclub is “particularly dangerous” and that the law applies equally to everyone, regardless of fame. He noted Brown’s low risk of future offending and his compliance with bail conditions.
Brown had earlier consented to a plea in July, and his former charges—assault, attempting to cause grievous bodily harm, and possessing an offensive weapon—were withdrawn after the admissions.
After sentencing, Brown stood with Akinlolu, clasped hands, and was met with cheers outside the courthouse. He later posted a short video from his car on Instagram, giving a thumbs‑up to fans.
