Berlin Pride Attack Ends with Suspect Shot Dead by Police
German police shot and killed Abdul Ballout, 21, a German citizen of Lebanese heritage, after he rushed a police team with a knife during a crisis at Berlin’s Christopher Street Day parade. The police operation took place on Sunday afternoon, ending a manhunt that had followed the attack’s onset earlier that evening.
The day’s violence began when a white van crashed into a crowd near Tiergarten park just before 10:00 pm. The ramming killed a woman and left at least 29 people wounded, with additional casualties from a subsequent stabbing assault. While officers were pursuing the suspect, Ballout leapt toward them with a knife, prompting a lethal response.
Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt confirmed the event was an “Islamist terror attack,” noting Ballout’s criminal record and affiliations with extremist networks. In 2025, he had travelled to Lebanon seeking to join the Islamic State, was arrested later that year, and faced imprisonment for incitement to religious and sectarian conflict. A 2026 conviction for “preparing serious acts of violence endangering the state” has further underscored the threat posed by the suspect.
The German government raised the domestic threat level following the assault and informed other European states to review security measures for major events. Chancellor Friedrich Merz visited the scene, later addressing a church service where he pledged to defend democracy and to keep extremist ideology out of society.
The attack shattered the celebratory mood of Berlin’s Pride festivities, leading to the cancellation of clean‑up and breakfast markets in Tiergarten park and the interruption of the planned Parade. Participants gathered at the Brandenburg Gate for an impromptu vigil, condemning extremism and voicing criticism over budget cuts that affected queer organisations.
In response to the violent incident, police reported that all injured victims were no longer in life‑threatening condition. Authorities continue to investigate the broader network and motives behind the tragic event.
