German Chancellor Warns Attackers Will ‘Pay Price’ After Leipzig Drone Incident

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has warned that those responsible for drone attacks and other hostile acts against Germany will face consequences. The warning followed the discovery of a drone carrying an explosive device at Leipzig/Halle Airport on 4 August, close to Ukrainian cargo planes.

Police defused the bomb and suspect a second drone may have collided with a nearby cargo aircraft. Authorities point to Russian operatives as the likely culprits, although Moscow has denied involvement.

Merz said Germany has become a target “with a very real threat” and the government is partnering with security teams to counter such incidents. He promised the country would enhance drone defences and empower security forces to strike back at attackers at home and abroad by hacking their servers.

Germany’s plan includes stronger air‑space surveillance, greater support for Ukraine’s war against Russia, and new measures to disrupt future drone over‑flights at sensitive sites across the nation.

‘We will not ignore the threats that stem from outside the country,’ Merz said at a coalition retreat in Neuhardenberg, reiterating Germany’s backing for Ukraine and its resolve to keep pressure on Russia until peace talks begin.
