Brown, 37, was taken into custody by U.S. Marshals in Dubai and has since been flown to Essex County, New Jersey, where he is being held pending extradition to Miami. Miami police spokesman Mike Vega indicated that the reasons behind his detour to New Jersey remain unclear. Brown has been active on social media from Dubai in recent months.

According to an arrest warrant connected to the incident on May 16, Brown is accused of seizing a handgun from a security personnel after the boxing match and firing at a man with whom he previously exchanged blows. The victim, Zul-Qarnain Kwame Nantambu, reported that one of the bullets grazed his neck.

Court documents do not clarify whether Brown has legal representation, and it is uncertain when he will be extradited to Miami. The attempted murder charge he faces carries a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison and a possible fine of $10,000.

Brown, who gained fame as an All-Pro wide receiver over 12 years in the NFL, notably with the Pittsburgh Steelers, last played in the league in 2021 for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, totaling 928 receptions for over 12,000 yards and 83 touchdowns. This latest incident adds to Brown's troubled history with legal issues, which includes accusations ranging from [battery](https://apnews.com/general-news-domestic-news-domestic-news-4a03a6fe1f2b521819510f040a6b3ce6) to domestic violence and child support failures. His tumultuous exit from the NFL was marked by a highly publicized incident during a 2021 game where he dramatically removed his jersey and left the field.
