US Ambassador Urges Accountability After Palestinian-American Killing in West Bank
US Ambassador Mike Huckabee demands investigation into death of Palestinian-American during violent encounter with Israeli settlers.
US Ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, has called on Israeli authorities to "aggressively investigate" the brutal killing of Palestinian-American Sayfollah Musallat in the occupied West Bank. The 20-year-old Florida resident was reportedly beaten to death by Israeli settlers in the town of Sinjil on Friday, an incident validated by the Palestinian health ministry.
In his remarks, Huckabee, known for his pro-settlement stance, strongly condemned the incident as a "criminal and terrorist act" during a press conference on Wednesday. The killing received heightened visibility following US President Donald Trump’s announcement of an upcoming meeting regarding the case. Trump stated, "They're going to be reporting that to me," highlighting the administration's concern over the incident.
According to details from the Israeli military, the violent confrontation was allegedly provoked when "terrorists" threw stones at Israeli civilians, but international scrutiny continues to focus on the settlers' actions. Musallat was visiting relatives in Sinjil when he was killed. His friend, 23-year-old Mohammed al-Shalabi, was also shot during the altercation.
Musallat's family claims he was defending their land from encroaching settlers when he was attacked, emphasizing the distressing dynamics between Palestinians and Israeli settlers. The family has urged the US state department to initiate an independent investigation into the matter.
On his X account, Ambassador Huckabee reiterated, "There must be accountability for this criminal and terrorist act. Saif was just 20 yrs old." Despite the push for accountability, the ambassador's strong alignment with Israeli settlements has drawn criticism from various political factions in the US.
Previously, Huckabee has advocated for the notion of a "greater Israel," supporting permanent Israeli control over the Occupied Palestinian Territories. His comments have attracted backlash, especially after criticizing US allies like the UK and Australia for sanctioning Israeli officials known for inciting violence in the region.
The ongoing complexities surrounding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict illustrate the deep-rooted challenges in achieving peace and justice in the area.
