Universal Studios Announces Major Theme Park in Bedfordshire, U.K.
The much-anticipated project is set to be Britain's largest tourist attraction when it opens in 2031, promising a mix of American and British characters.
Universal Studios has revealed that it will build its first theme park in Europe, located in Bedfordshire, England, slated to open in 2031. This yet-to-be-named theme park is expected to become the largest tourist destination in the country, featuring various themed areas combining beloved American franchises like "Jurassic Park" alongside iconic British figures such as Paddington Bear, Doctor Who, and Harry Potter.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed his enthusiasm for the project, calling it a vital step toward invigorating the sluggish British economy and showcasing his administration's commitment to cutting bureaucratic delays that hinder large projects. "Today we closed the deal on a multibillion-pound investment that will see Bedford home to one of the biggest entertainment parks in Europe,” Starmer elaborated. The project will reportedly create around 28,000 jobs and is projected to bring nearly $64 billion (£50 billion) in revenue to the region by 2055.
Despite the excitement, there remain challenges as the theme park will take years to develop on a currently empty site located about 35 minutes north of London. This long timeline introduces uncertainty, reminiscent of past struggles faced by other theme park ventures in the area. Nonetheless, local officials believe the announcement marks a positive turn for the region as it aims to foster significant economic growth in the coming years.
