Adolescence, The White Lotus, Severance, and The Penguin are just a few of the TV shows competing at the Emmys, television's most prestigious ceremony.

Owen Cooper, the 15-year-old star of Adolescence, has the chance to make history as the youngest male actor to win an Emmy.

Meanwhile, a campaign led by US chat show hosts following the cancellation of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert could see the program win outstanding talk series for the first time.

The ceremony will take place on Sunday evening at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles.

Other contenders for top prizes include The Studio, Andor, Hacks, Slow Horses, The Bear, Nobody Wants This, and The Last of Us.

Here's what you need to know ahead of the biggest night in TV:

Who is hosting the Emmys?

US comedian Nate Bargatze will host this year's Emmys. Although not widely recognized in the UK, he gained immense popularity in the US and sold more tickets to his shows than any other stand-up last year.

Bargatze, known for his family-friendly humor, has promised not to follow in the footsteps of Eddie Murphy with any controversial opening monologues.

He considers it a huge honour to host the Emmys, proposing a charitable twist where he will donate $100,000, diminishing for each acceptance speech that exceeds the time limit.

Which TV shows are nominated?

The Emmys feature three categories: comedy, drama, and limited series.

Outstanding drama is the highlighted category, especially with Shogun not in this year’s race, paving the way for contenders like The White Lotus, Andor, Paradise, and Severance.

This year's comedy competition sees The Bear and Hacks trying to retain their crowns.

Record Breakers and Controversies

If Owen Cooper wins, he would not only be the youngest ever winner in his category but also the youngest male winner in any acting category. The current record is held by Roxana Zal, who was just 14 when she won in 1984.

How to watch the Emmy Awards

The ceremony begins at 17:00 PT / 20:00 ET on Sunday or 01:00 BST on Monday for UK viewers. US viewers can catch it live on CBS or streaming on Paramount+. In the UK, while there’s no live broadcast, the BBC News website will offer live coverage.

The event is expected to be filled with excitement as past Creative Arts Emmys have already announced some winners. For further information on nominated shows, visit our special reports.
