Torrential Rains Trigger Flood Emergency in Lanzarote
A severe weather event leads to emergency measures across the popular holiday destination.
Severe flooding struck parts of Lanzarote this past weekend following intense rainfall, resulting in a government-declared state of emergency. Over two hours on Saturday, the popular Canary Island received 6cm (2.4 inches) of rain, causing widespread flooding across hundreds of homes and roadways.
Authorities reported no injuries related to the flooding, and the emergency declaration was lifted on Sunday morning. Enrique Espinosa, head of Lanzarote’s emergency services, informed local news of the extensive efforts undertaken overnight, detailing that they responded to approximately 300 emergency calls, many originating from the towns of Arrecife and Teguise.
The region of San Bartolomé was particularly affected by the deluge, with many homes submerged under water and considerable mud left in its wake. Social media platforms were flooded with dramatic videos showcasing rapid floodwaters rushing beneath bridges and stranding vehicles on inundated streets.
The Canary Islands are no stranger to the dangers of flash flooding due to their dry climate and volcanic rock, factors that hinder water absorption. The current torrential rains followed the passage of Storm Olivier, which impacted not only the Canary Islands but also mainland Spain and Portugal, leading to a series of weather warnings by Spain's meteorological service, which anticipate continued storms, rain, and strong winds across various regions until Tuesday.
As the community begins to recover from this unprecedented weather event, the focus now shifts to assessing damage and ensuring the safety of residents and tourists alike in the aftermath of the floods.
