Tragedy Strikes in Nigeria: Family Lost to Devastating Floods
A father recounts the harrowing moment he lost nine family members to flooding in Niger state.
Adamu Yusuf's life has taken a tragic turn after losing nine family members, including his wife and newborn, to severe flooding in Tiffin Maza, Niger State. "She was the one that woke me up when the flood hit," he recounted with agonizing clarity. "We quickly gathered the family, but as we stepped outside, we saw water everywhere." The floodwaters surged early Thursday morning; his family had just returned from visiting relatives when disaster struck. "I watched helplessly as water washed away my family. I survived because I could swim and felt it was divine intervention," narrated the father-of-one.
As local officials confirm the death toll has risen to over 200, concerns grow that this number could increase further. Many in the Mokwa Town community report seeing overwhelming destruction, with remnants of once-thriving households now reduced to soaked mattresses and shattered metal roofing. "I lost everything to this flood," Adamu lamented, surveying the debris that marked the remnants of his life.
For 19-year-old Isa Muhammed, the situation is equally heart-wrenching. He mourns for his beloved teacher, who lost not only his home but also family members, including a baby. The community gathers to support each other and participate in the search for those missing. The memory of a Quranic school near Adamu's home haunts another resident, Ramat Sulaiman, who watched in horror as children inside cried for help until the building was submerged.
Saliu Sulaiman's property losses are compounded by psychological trauma. "I lost at least $1,500 to the flood," he shared, recounting the perilous moment he chose not to rreturn to retrieve his farm’s profits. "There were so many dead bodies in the water," he added.
Mokwa District Head, Alhaji Muhammadu Shaba Aliyu, explained that a reservoir in the area could spill during rains, but residents believe this flood's impact is beyond anything they have witnessed historically. “It came out of nowhere,” said one resident, indicating they believe heavy rainfall is not the sole cause.
As the community continues to search for missing loved ones, the National Emergency Management Agency has been mobilizing resources for the injured and displaced, while the Meteorological Agency warns of ongoing flood risks as the rainy season persists. With the state of Niger reported as vulnerable to flooding, residents begin to grapple with the aftermath of one of the worst natural disasters in recent memory—one that leaves scars that may never heal.
