Thai Woman Sentenced to Death for Murdering Friends with Cyanide
Sararat Rangsiwuthaporn faces the death penalty in Thailand after being found guilty of the poisoning deaths of multiple friends.
A woman in Thailand has been handed a death penalty sentence after being found guilty of murdering multiple friends using cyanide as a lethal poison. Sararat Rangsiwuthaporn, aged 36, was convicted by a Bangkok court in what marks the beginning of a series of serious charges against her, specifically in relation to the deaths of 14 acquaintances.
The case gained traction after Sararat was implicated in the death of her wealthy friend, Siriporn Khanwong, 32, who tragically died last year during a trip. Following suspicions raised by Siriporn's family, an autopsy revealed cyanide in her system, leading to Sararat's arrest in April 2023. Investigators subsequently uncovered a pattern of similar deaths dating back to 2015, suggesting a calculated method of targeting friends from whom she had borrowed money.
Known in the media as "Am Cyanide," Sararat reportedly had a gambling addiction which drove her to allegedly poison those she owed. On the fatal trip to Ratchaburi province, Sararat accompanied Siriporn to partake in a Buddhist ritual. However, following a meal, Siriporn collapsed and died, with evidence suggesting Sararat made no attempt to assist her.
During the court proceedings, Siriporn's mother expressed her grief and relief at seeing a semblance of justice, stating, "Today, there is justice in this world," as she confronted Sararat, who allegedly showed no remorse at the sentencing. Furthermore, Sararat's former husband and lawyer received prison terms for obstructing justice, indicating a wider network involved in concealing her alleged crimes.
In addition to the death sentence, the court ordered Sararat to compensate Siriporn's family with two million baht (approximately $57,667 or £45,446), underscoring the devastating impact of her actions. Cyanide poisoning severely impacts the human body by inhibiting oxygen delivery to cells, leading to life-threatening conditions.
This harrowing case has raised serious discussions in Thailand about the regulation of cyanide and the circumstances surrounding these tragic deaths, while authorities continue to investigate further related incidents.
