Tragic Protests Erupt in Nepal: Families Demand Justice for Victims

Recent protests in Nepal against corruption have turned deadly, with over 70 individuals, mostly young people, killed in clashes with police. Many families are mourning the loss of their loved ones, who were killed while demanding accountability and change from the government.

Among those grieving is Narendra Shrestha, who lost his 21-year-old son, Sulov, during the protests. 'Who will take responsibility for my son's death?' he asks tearfully, lamenting the government's response.

Protests began last Monday following a government decision to ban social media platforms, which angered many and sparked wider dissatisfaction over the ruling class's corruption. While initially aiming to address fake news and online fraud, the government's actions resulted in violent outbreaks as protesters clashed with police, leading to significant casualties.

The situation escalated as demonstrators set fire to government buildings, including Nepal's parliament, following Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli's resignation. Now, Sushila Karki, the 73-year-old interim Prime Minister, faces her greatest challenge as she must restore order while ensuring justice for the victims and holding accountable those in charge during the violent protests.

'We want justice,' one grieving relative stated, as families gathered outside mortuaries to identify the deceased. Many victims had hopeful dreams shattered by the senseless violence.

As calls for accountability grow louder, the government must act swiftly to heal the deep wounds inflicted on the community and prevent future tragedies.
