Three police officers were killed and two others critically injured in a shooting in the US state of Pennsylvania, while following up on a domestic-related investigation, authorities have disclosed.
Pennsylvania State Police Commissioner Colonel Christopher Paris reported that the gunman was fatally shot by police.
The incident occurred just after 14:00 local time (18:00 GMT) in a rural area of York County, North Codorus Township, approximately 100 miles (160 km) east of Philadelphia. Images from the scene showed a police officer being airlifted in a medical helicopter.
Nearby schools were briefly put on lockdown, but officials assured that the schools had not been affected by the shooting.
Commissioner Paris noted that details of the investigation were still unfolding, and more information would be provided as it becomes available. On-site investigations had begun the day prior to this tragic event.
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro expressed his condolences at the scene, stating, We grieve for the loss of life of three precious souls who served this county, served this commonwealth, served this country, emphasizing the need for a societal change to prevent such violence.
In honor of the officers, flags will be lowered to half-mast across all public buildings and grounds throughout the state.
FBI Director Kash Patel assured that agents were providing ongoing assistance to both local and state authorities. Our prayers are with the officers, their families, and the entire York County community, Patel stated.
