Taiwan Orders Deportation of Pro-Beijing Influencer Amid Rising Tensions
Taiwan's immigration authorities revoke the visa of a Chinese influencer known for her pro-Beijing stance, escalating cross-strait sensitivities.
Taiwan has officially ordered the deportation of Liu, a Chinese social media influencer better known as Yaya, after she shared videos promoting China's claim over Taiwan and calling for unification, even if it means the use of force. The Taiwanese National Immigration Agency (NIA) justified the decision, stating that her actions support the elimination of Taiwan's sovereignty – a sentiment not tolerated within Taiwanese society. Liu, who had moved to Taiwan on a dependent visa after marrying a Taiwanese citizen, has been given until 24 March to leave the island voluntarily or face forcible deportation.
In her controversial videos, she refers to Taiwan as "Taiwan Province" and echoes Beijing's narrative of its claims over Taiwan, arguing that "complete unification" is essential regardless of Taiwanese public opinion. This position has led to widespread backlash, prompting Taiwan's Interior Minister Liu Shyh-fang to assert that freedom of expression does not justify advocating for an invasion. This incident marks a rare case of Taiwan expelling a spouse of a Taiwanese citizen, highlighting the increased scrutiny placed on mainland Chinese individuals amid escalating tensions between Taiwan and China. President Lai Ching-te has called for tighter controls on cross-strait exchanges, which are perceived as potential threats to Taiwan's democratic integrity.
