A 6.0 magnitude earthquake struck Afghanistan's eastern mountainous region, reportedly killing hundreds. The quake occurred at 23:47 local time and was felt as far as 140km away in Kabul.

Rescue operations in Nangarhar and Kunar provinces are challenging due to the area's rugged terrain. Aftershocks have compounded the destruction. Initial confirmations indicate significant casualties and damaged infrastructure, complicating relief efforts.

With over 600 presumed dead according to the Taliban's interior ministry, many homes were buried under rubble. Reports also indicate blocked roads due to landslides, with helicopters deployed for evacuations.

The situation is exacerbated by an economic crisis in Afghanistan. Humanitarian assistance is crucial as the majority of the population is in need of support.

Afghanistan's geographic position makes it susceptible to severe earthquakes, and past events have shown how debilitating these disasters can be for the already fragile infrastructure.
