Gerald Stratford: The Giant Vegetable Gardener's Continued Fame
Gerald Stratford shares his journey from viral fame to gardening joys amidst post-pandemic life.
Gerald Stratford is still hard at work in his garden, growing extraordinarily large vegetables that have captured the internet's imagination. The affable Mr. Stratford first gained recognition in May 2020 when he posted two photos on Twitter: one of him holding a massive bundle of arugula, known as rocket in the UK, and another where he sits on an upside-down bucket beside a bowl of potatoes. In his post, he exclaimed, “My first early rocket, very pleased!”
Following this, a wave of internet fame swept over him, leading to appearances on radio and television, as well as a coveted book deal. The food website Eater hailed him as the “Twitter king of ‘big veg’ gardening,” while Newsweek offered him a regular column.
Now, five years later, Stratford reflects on his unexpected journey with a sense of ease. “I think I am enjoying it more now than at the beginning,” he shares, noting that he has learned to navigate his newfound fame more comfortably.
In a recent phone conversation, Stratford expressed his continued enthusiasm for gardening and his delight in nurturing giants among his produce. “My greenhouse is full and overflowing,” he reported enthusiastically. Apart from his signature carrots, parsnips, and zucchini, he revealed his quest to cultivate a giant melon this season.
For Stratford, gardening remains a source of happiness against the backdrop of a challenging post-pandemic world. “The world, it’s not a very nice place still since the pandemic,” he said, emphasizing the value of health. “But we have our health, and that’s what matters.” With a determined spirit, Stratford has no intention of leaving his garden behind. “Long may I continue,” he declared, excited for what lies ahead in his gardening adventures.
