Pope Francis Leaves Hospital with Blessing for the Faithful
Pope Francis expresses gratitude and optimistic outlook following his discharge from Gemelli hospital in Rome.
Pope Francis has made a public appearance from his hospital window at the Gemelli hospital in Rome, offering a heartfelt blessing to his supporters for the first time since his admission on February 14. The 88-year-old pontiff was discharged shortly after, with doctors emphasizing that he requires at least two months of rest within the Vatican.
Dr. Sergio Alfieri, one of the Pope’s treating physicians, disclosed that the pontiff faced "two very critical episodes" during his hospitalization, which put his life at risk. However, he confirmed that the Pope had never been intubated and remained aware and alert throughout his stay. While he is not fully healed, Dr. Alfieri stated that the pneumonia has resolved, and if the positive trend continues, the Pope will return to work at the earliest opportunity.
Rome's Mayor Roberto Gualtieri expressed immense joy over the Pope’s recovery, calling his release a "great gift" to both the city and the world. "We support him and feel really close to him,” the mayor commented.
Outside the hospital, crowds gathered to catch a glimpse of the Pope, with many expressing their emotions upon seeing him. Bishop Larry Kulick from Pennsylvania felt relief and joy, stating, “When I saw him I felt... overwhelmed.” Rome local Ilaria Della Bidia described the atmosphere outside the hospital as heavenly, while Ana Matos, visiting from Brazil, shared her overwhelming joy on witnessing the Pope’s healthy appearance, likening it to the happiness of childbirth.
The Pope, who has previously undergone multiple health challenges, had only been seen publicly once since his hospitalization through a photo of him praying in the hospital chapel. Earlier this month, an audio recording of him thanking the Catholic faithful for their prayers was played in St. Peter's Square, echoing his appreciation for the overwhelming support he has received during his recovery journey. Having led the Roman Catholic Church for 12 years, Pope Francis’s health remains a significant concern for many across the globe.
