Man Charged for Arson Attacks Linked to U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer
Romanian Stanislav Carpiuc faces charges after multiple fires targeted properties associated with the PM.
In a significant development, police have charged Stanislav Carpiuc, a 26-year-old Romanian national, with conspiracy to commit arson in connection with a series of fires targeting properties linked to U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer. The Metropolitan Police confirmed the charges on Tuesday.
The incidents, which involved two residential buildings and a vehicle, occurred earlier this month. One fire ignited on May 12 at the front door of a house in Kentish Town, north London, where Starmer and his family resided until last year, before transitioning to the official residence at Downing Street following his election victory.
The day prior, flames erupted at another building in Islington, an area where Starmer was known to have lived during the 1990s. Additionally, a vehicle fire was reported in Kentish Town on May 8. Notably, the car targeted was previously owned by Starmer before being sold to a neighbor. Fortunately, no injuries were reported from these incidents, although the door of the Kentish Town residence—which is currently being rented out—sustained damage.
Investigations are being led by counterterrorism police due to the potential risks posed by targeting a prominent public figure. Carpiuc’s charges relate to a conspiracy involving another suspect, Roman Lavrynovych, a 21-year-old Ukrainian national who appeared in court last week. During the proceedings, prosecutor Sarah Przybylska informed the Westminster Magistrates’ Court that all involved properties and the vehicle were directly connected to the Prime Minister, further underscoring the seriousness of the situation.
Carpiuc was apprehended on Saturday at London Luton Airport by counter-terrorism officers and is scheduled to appear at the Westminster Magistrates' Court on Tuesday. Authorities deem the investigation an ongoing matter, with further updates anticipated as details unfold.
