U.S. Treasury Sanctions Chinese Tech Firm Linked to Cyber Espionage
The U.S. Treasury imposes sanctions on Integrity Technology Group for aiding Chinese hackers in infiltration and surveillance operations worldwide.
The Department of the Treasury announced sanctions against Integrity Technology Group, a Beijing-based cybersecurity firm, on Friday, citing the company’s role in supporting Chinese hacking group Flax Typhoon in a widespread surveillance campaign targeting U.S. communications systems and other international networks.
According to the announcement, the Treasury Department found that Integrity Technology Group facilitated operations for Flax Typhoon from the summer of 2022 to 2023, enabling the group to send and receive sensitive information through its infrastructure. This development follows revelations earlier this week that a Chinese intelligence agency had infiltrated Treasury systems, gaining access to unclassified documents and government employee workstations.
While the Treasury spokesperson did not confirm if Flax Typhoon was involved in the breach, the sanctions are seen as part of a larger strategy to counter China’s expanding cyber capabilities. This comes in the wake of a similar incident last year involving another Chinese hacking group, Salt Typhoon, which compromised U.S. telecommunications networks.
Flax Typhoon has been active since 2021 and is noted for targeting sensitive areas, particularly Taiwan and the United States. The group has been identified as state-sponsored, with Microsoft also attributing various cyberattacks to it.
In a stern statement, acting under secretary of the Treasury, Bradley T. Smith, emphasized the United States' commitment to holding malicious cyber actors accountable and enhancing public and private cybersecurity measures. He declared, “The Treasury Department will not hesitate to hold malicious cyberactors and their enablers accountable for their actions.”
The FBI previously reported dismantling a network of 200,000 consumer devices compromised by Flax Typhoon’s malware, highlighting the expansive reach and impact of the hacking group.
The sanctions imposed on Integrity Technology Group prohibit any financial institutions or individuals from conducting transactions with the company and freeze its assets within the U.S. While the implications of the Treasury breach remain unclear, the potential access to sensitive sanctions-related information underscores the high stakes associated with cyber espionage and national security vulnerabilities.
