In a significant diplomatic exchange, China and Russia reaffirmed their commitment to each other, showing solidarity amid international scrutiny.
Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin held a noteworthy video call just hours after Donald Trump was inaugurated on Monday. In a cordial exchange that lasted approximately one-and-a-half hours, the two leaders pledged to elevate their bilateral relationship to "greater heights," according to reports from state media in both nations.
Putin referred to Xi as his "dear friend," highlighting the foundation of their ties built upon "friendship, mutual trust, and support," particularly in light of external pressures. Xi echoed this sentiment, calling for further strategic coordination, enhancing mutual backing, and protecting their legitimate interests on the global stage.
In stark contrast, Trump’s comments the following day targeted China, labeling it as "an abuser" and threatening tariffs. He also warned Russia of dire consequences if it fails to negotiate an end to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Putin, however, reiterated the stance that any resolution regarding Ukraine must honor Russia's interests, as disclosed by foreign affairs adviser Yuri Ushakov.
The exchange occurred amid heightened scrutiny regarding China's role in supplying critical components to bolster Russia's military efforts in Ukraine, with trade between the two countries reaching a historic $240 billion in 2023, marking a dramatic rise of over 64% since before Russia's invasion.
Ushakov stated that both leaders are open to developing relations with the U.S. based on mutual benefit and respect, contingent upon an interest from the Trump administration. Nonetheless, he emphasized that the timing of the call had no direct connection to Trump's inauguration.
During their video meeting, Putin and Xi also touched upon other geopolitical issues, including developments in the Middle East, South Korea, and Taiwan. Chinese state media reported that Xi expressed readiness to collaborate with Putin in navigating "external uncertainties," although no specific details were provided.
Though Xi had a previous conversation with Trump, which the U.S. president deemed positive, it remains to be seen when Putin will communicate directly with Trump, despite having congratulated him shortly before the inauguration on state television.
