Reunion of Courage: Israeli Soldiers Celebrate Homecoming After Hostage Crisis
Emotional reunions marked the return of Israeli female soldiers taken hostage during the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023.
Nineteen-year-old Liri Albag wept tears of joy as she rushed into her parents’ waiting arms, the emotional reunion captured by the Israeli military as the first time the family had seen each other in over a year. Her mother exclaimed, “My beauty, you’re a hero. You’re home.” Liri was one of the first hostages captured during the Hamas attack that targeted her military base on October 7, 2023. She, along with three fellow female soldiers, was released as part of a ceasefire agreement that also involved the release of 200 Palestinian prisoners.
The atmosphere in Tel Aviv was charged with anticipation as crowds gathered in Hostages Square, anxiously watching the live news feed of the handover in Gaza. The moment the women appeared, flanked by Hamas gunmen, cheers erupted. Many in the crowd felt a mix of excitement and relief, with one woman noting, "It's amazing. They're amazing. Did you see them stand and smile?"
Medical assessments followed the women’s release, with Beilinson Hospital's director, Dr. Lena Koren Feldman, confirming their stable conditions while emphasizing the need for thorough emotional evaluations. The four women were part of an unarmed all-female unit responsible for monitoring surveillance footage along the Gaza border, a crucial but perilous role in preventing conflicts.
While joyous for the families of the returned soldiers, the day carried bittersweet undertones, especially for relatives of those lost during the conflict. Elad Levy mourned his niece Roni, who served alongside the released women but was killed in the attacks. “We are very happy to see Karina, Daniella, Liri and Naama coming back home to their families," he said, but added, "we remember Roni who will never come back home.”
Amidst the celebrations, the families of Omer Berger, another soldier who remains in Gaza, expressed their ongoing hope for her safe return, stating they were eagerly awaiting news while celebrating their loved ones’ homecoming. Although Hamas was expected to release more civilian hostages soon, the return of the soldiers stood as a moment of hope and resilience amid the complex backdrop of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
