US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) shot and killed a man near Chicago on Friday after he allegedly drove his car at a group of agents.
A spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security stated that ICE had been attempting to arrest the man, but he resisted and drove toward the group, dragging an agent along with his vehicle. Fearing for his life, the agent drew his weapon and opened fire.
The driver, Silverio Villegas-Gonzales, was declared dead shortly after being transported to the hospital.
During a vehicle stop, the suspect resisted and attempted to drive his vehicle into the arrest team, striking an officer and subsequently dragging him as he fled the scene, the statement detailed.
The injured ICE agent sustained severe injuries but is currently in stable condition at a local hospital.
According to the Department of Homeland Security, Villegas-Gonzales had a documented history of reckless driving and was identified as an undocumented migrant who entered the U.S. at an unspecified date.
The Franklin Park Police Department reported that they were not involved in the incident.
In response, Illinois Governor JB Pritzker emphasized the need for a comprehensive and accurate account of the incident to maintain transparency and accountability.
The suburb of Franklin Park, home to about 18,000 residents and a significant Hispanic population, has seen increased immigration enforcement activity initiated by the Trump administration.
