Tragic Loss: Olympic Snowboarder Sophie Hediger Dies in Avalanche

The Swiss snowboard community mourns the shocking death of 26-year-old Sophie Hediger, who perished in an avalanche while snowboarding in Arosa.

Sophie Hediger, a talented snowboarder who represented Switzerland at the 2022 Winter Olympics, tragically died in an avalanche in Arosa. The Swiss ski federation and her supporters reflect on her promising career and untimely death during the holiday season.

Sophie Hediger, a member of Switzerland’s national snowboard cross team and Olympic athlete at the 2022 Beijing Winter Games, has died following an avalanche incident in the Swiss Alps. The 26-year-old athlete was snowboarding in Arosa on Monday when the tragic event occurred.

Earlier in December, Hediger had participated in a World Cup race in Cervinia, Italy, marking her as a notable competitor on the international snowboard race circuit. She achieved her first podium finish in January by taking second place in St. Moritz, Switzerland, and followed it with a third-place finish in February at Gudauri, Georgia.

During the Olympics, Hediger and teammate Kalle Koblet secured seventh place in the mixed team snowboard cross event, while she finished 19th individually.

On the day of the accident, Hediger was snowboarding with a companion on a closed black diamond slope when they left the designated area. She was subsequently caught in an avalanche, prompting her companion to summon rescue services and initiate a search for her. Despite a rapid response from various rescue teams, including Avalanche search dog specialists and Alpine police, Hediger was found buried in the snow at approximately 3:30 p.m., but unfortunately, resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful.

Walter Reusser, Chief Executive of Swiss Ski, expressed profound sorrow over Hediger's death. The ski federation honored her memory, emphasizing the significant loss felt by her family, friends, and the snowboarding community.

Grown up in Horgen, south of Zurich, Hediger was known for her dedication to the sport, having spent considerable time in Arosa, a location close to her heart. This tragic loss has cast a shadow over the holiday season for many who knew her, marking a somber moment in the sports world.
