In a somber reflection of the ongoing migrant crisis, a heartbreaking incident occurred recently in the central Mediterranean where three young sisters drowned while fleeing from Libya aboard an overcrowded rubber boat. The journey, marked by treacherous conditions and overcrowding, ended in tragedy as waves reaching up to 1.5 meters repeatedly flooded the vessel.

The German rescue charity RESQSHIP provided accounts of the harrowing experience, explaining that about 65 people were rescued, including the survivors' mother, their brother, three pregnant women, and a seven-month-old baby. Rescuers discovered the sisters, aged 9, 11, and 17, submerged beneath the water as they attempted to execute evacuations in chaotic conditions.

“There were screams and someone pointed to the water inside the boat,” relayed Barbara Sartore, the charity’s communications coordinator on the rescue ship Nadir. The chaos of the situation, compounded by overcrowding and panic, made it impossible for survivors to realize that the sisters had drowned, leading to sheer horror among those present.

The boat had set off from Libya, a key launching point for many migrants hoping to reach safety in Europe, particularly the Italian island of Lampedusa. RESQSHIP revealed that many survivors suffered from severe chemical burns due to the combined effects of seawater and petrol onboard, and one person who had fallen overboard remained missing.

The incident, while tragic, is not isolated. UN agencies have reported that more than 700 individuals have perished attempting to cross the central Mediterranean from North Africa this year alone, emphasizing the pressing need for enhanced search and rescue operations and protection for survivors once they reach land.

Katja Schnitzer, a crew member on the rescue boat, summarized the enormity of the tragedy, stating, "What happened to the three sisters is unimaginable, as is the danger that people on the move face in search of safety." The question remains: how much longer will such tragedies occur before effective measures are put in place to prevent them?

The international community faces increasing pressure to address the humanitarian crisis in the Mediterranean, as the plight of vulnerable migrants continues to unfold.
