Tensions in Gaza City have soared as Israeli military forces have launched extensive air and ground assaults in preparation for what is anticipated to be a significant offensive. Nearly one million Palestinians currently reside in the city, and with the continuous barrages from planes and tanks, local residents describe an atmosphere filled with relentless explosions, particularly affecting the northern and eastern sectors.

The humanitarian impact has been devastating, with sixty-four reported fatalities and nearly 300 injuries in just 24 hours, according to the Hamas-operated health ministry. Since the commencement of Israel’s military campaign against Hamas in response to the deadly attack on October 7, 2023, the death toll has spiked to an alarming figure of 62,686, with more than 157,951 injuries.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu remains steadfast in his intention to dismantle Hamas, disregarding mounting international criticism of his military strategy. As part of this escalation, approximately 60,000 reserve troops have been mobilized. While the main assault has yet to formally commence, bombardments persist in targeted districts such as Zeitoun and Shejayia, alongside ongoing ground operations in the Jabalia refugee camp to the north.

Also recently reported, a staff member from the World Health Organization has reportedly returned after being held by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) since July 21. However, details surrounding the detention remain sparse.

With Netanyahu facing pressure from many, especially families of hostages taken during the October attacks, discussions focused on negotiating an end to the conflict have become increasingly critical. Presently, it is estimated that only 20 of the 50 hostages believed to be held in Gaza are still alive, which adds urgency to the negotiations.

Efforts from Qatar and Egypt to mediate a truce have encountered setbacks, particularly with Israel now insisting on a comprehensive agreement that includes the unconditional release of all hostages. The situation escalates further, with Israel's Defense Minister stating that the city would face severe consequences if Hamas does not comply with disarmament demands. The plan includes evacuating Gaza City's populace to designated shelters in the southern territories before launching full military operations.

Humanitarian organizations continue to raise alarms over the ongoing humanitarian crisis, indicating that more than 90% of the region’s housing infrastructure has suffered extensive damage, putting even basic needs, like healthcare, sanitation, and water supplies, at severe risk. The United Nations has confirmed that famine conditions have emerged within Gaza City, which compounds the already dire predicament for its inhabitants.
