Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced the defense operations, revealing that the incursions involved approximately 19 Russian drones, some of which forced a temporary shutdown of four airports, including Warsaw's Chopin Airport.
Tusk expressed grave concerns, stating, This situation brings us the closest we have been to open conflict since World War Two, marking the first instance of Russian drones being downed over NATO territory since the onset of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
In response, Russian officials denied targeting Polish facilities and claimed the drones may have unintentionally strayed into Polish airspace due to navigation disruptions. Nonetheless, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned that such actions set a dangerous precedent for European security.
