Danish Zoo Calls for Pet Donations to Feed Predators

Aalborg Zoo encourages the public to donate healthy unwanted pets as part of a sustainable feeding initiative for its predators.

The Aalborg Zoo in Denmark has launched an unusual campaign, inviting pet owners to donate healthy unwanted animals to help supply food for its carnivorous residents. The zoo is specifically looking for animals such as live chickens, rabbits, and guinea pigs, which are fed to animals like lions, tigers, and Eurasian lynx. Pets can be dropped off on weekdays, and horse owners who meet certain criteria may receive tax deductions. According to the zoo’s deputy director, this practice aims at mimicking natural food sources for the animals. While some animal welfare advocates express concern, many view the initiative as a responsible way to handle unwanted pets.

The zoo’s Instagram post highlights the importance of providing a diet reminiscent of the animals’ natural hunting habits. Alongside smaller livestock, the zoo also accepts donations of horses under specific conditions. The initiative aligns with a broader practice within Denmark's zoos, encouraging community involvement in animal care and management. The discussion around animal welfare and responsible pet ownership continues, emphasized by recent controversies surrounding zoo culling practices in other countries.

By implementing such donation programs, Aalborg Zoo not only addresses the dietary needs of its carnivores but also encourages responsible pet management among the public.
