Musk's Breakthrough: Tesla and Starlink Launch in India
Elon Musk's ventures make strides in India with the launch of Starlink and the opening of a Tesla showroom.
In a significant week for Elon Musk, India welcomed two of his leading companies, marking transformative breakthroughs for Tesla and SpaceX. On July 9, after a lengthy three-year waiting period, Musk's satellite broadband venture, Starlink, obtained final regulatory approval to commence commercial operations in India. Shortly after, on July 11, the first Tesla showroom opened its doors in Mumbai, offering Indian consumers their first opportunity to purchase Tesla electric cars.
Industry experts view these milestones as promising indicators of Musk's long-sought ambitions to penetrate the Indian market. Despite having a complex relationship with Prime Minister Narendra Modi—who has frequently met with Musk to discuss business—Musk's social media platform, X, is currently engaged in a legal battle with the Indian government regarding content restrictions.
The launch of Starlink is a significant development in addressing the digital divide in the country, where approximately 600 million individuals remain without internet access. The service's potential to reach even a fraction of this demographic presents a meaningful market opportunity for connectivity. Starlink achieved its regulatory milestone by obtaining a license from the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre, paving the way for its operational rollout.
