Spectators attending the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles could experience a novel way to navigate the city, thanks to the introduction of an air taxi service, which aims to alleviate the area’s infamous traffic congestion. The LA28 organizing committee, responsible for planning the Olympics, has revealed an exciting collaboration with Archer Aviation to offer aerial transport during both the Olympic and Paralympic events.
Archer Aviation plans to deploy a fleet of electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, providing quick 10-20 minute flights across key locations, including the major event venues of the Games. While flying taxis have long been a subject of fascination, the company has yet to receive certification from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), which remains necessary for commercial operations. The founder of Archer Aviation, Adam Goldstein, expressed optimism about acquiring this vital Type Certification within the year.
If approved in time, spectators would be able to summon an air taxi via a smartphone app, with fares aimed to rival those of upper-tier ride-hailing services like Uber. Each flying taxi has the capacity to accommodate up to four passengers, operating with a landing and take-off method akin to traditional helicopters. The Midnight aircraft, which is central to this service, boasts 12 engines designed to minimize noise and emissions compared to conventional helicopters.
Archer Aviation's vision for Los Angeles' transport landscape seeks to establish a pioneering model that may inspire future urban travel solutions in the U.S. and beyond. Addressing the legacy of urban mobility challenges, Goldstein commented, "There’s no better time to redefine transportation than during the LA28 Games."
While Archer Aviation and other eVTOL manufacturers face obstacles like regulatory hurdles and the push for increased safety standards, there remains a strong belief in the viability of flying taxis as a transportation revolution. As various worldwide governments acknowledge the potential in aerial transport—like the UK's Future of Flight action plan forecasting the debut of flying taxis by 2026—the upcoming Los Angeles Games could provide a global stage for this innovative travel method.
Los Angeles previously hosted the Olympics in 1984 and 1932, making 2028 its third tie-in with the prestigious international sporting event. Interestingly, the city has committed to hosting the Games without conventional car use, which poses unique logistical challenges given prior plans for transit infrastructure upgrades were not finalized.
