Radio Host Marty Sheargold Fired for Misogynistic Remarks about Matildas

Marty Sheargold's derogatory comments about Australia's women's football team, the Matildas, lead to his departure from Triple M.

A notable Australian radio presenter has been dismissed following offensive comments made about the nation's women's football team, sparking significant backlash and condemnation.

In an unexpected turn of events, Marty Sheargold, a radio presenter for Triple M in Australia, has parted ways with the network after making derogatory remarks regarding the cherished women's football team, known as the Matildas. During a segment of his drivetime show, Sheargold said that the Matildas reminded him of “year 10 girls” and suggested that their matches lacked excitement, alluding to a stereotype of adolescent girls' behavior.

The comments, which many deemed misogynistic and disrespectful, did not sit well with listeners, prompting immediate outrage. In response, Sheargold issued an apology stating he understood the severity of his words and expressed regret to the Matildas and their supporters. Despite his apology, he did not return to the air as expected.

Southern Cross Austereo (SCA), the parent company of Triple M, later confirmed that Sheargold and the station agreed to a mutual separation. The company emphasized its commitment to upholding standards that resonate with its audience's expectations. Dave Cameron, SCA's chief content officer, remarked on the importance of reflection in light of the incident and assured continued support for staff members.

Sheargold's remarks sparked numerous criticisms from various stakeholders, including the sport’s governing body, which noted that such comments devalue the remarkable accomplishments of the Matildas, who reached the semi-finals in the 2023 Women's World Cup. Australian Minister for Sport Anika Wells labeled the comments as “boorish, boring and wrong,” while cricketing legend Ambrosia Malone voiced her distress over how young athletes might perceive such negativity in mainstream media.

Football Australia echoed this disappointment, asserting that the incident highlights the media's crucial role in promoting respectful discourse about women’s sports and highlighting the contributions of female athletes. The fallout from Sheargold’s remarks underscores an ongoing societal dialogue regarding respect and equity in sports, with the Matildas standing as symbols of progress and pride for the nation.
