Vanuatu Moves to Revoke Andrew Tate's Citizenship Amid Legal Controversies

Vanuatu is scrutinizing Andrew Tate's golden passport acquisition linked to his legal troubles as calls for reform grow.

In a significant development, Vanuatu authorities are considering revoking the citizenship of controversial influencer Andrew Tate after reports surfaced regarding the acquisition of his golden passport during his 2022 arrest in Romania for serious charges, including rape and human trafficking.

Tate, known for his provocative views, was granted Vanuatu citizenship through a citizenship-by-investment program that requires an investment of at least $130,000 in the small Pacific nation. This scheme, while financially beneficial for Vanuatu, has sparked serious security concerns, especially after the European Union revoked visa-free access for Vanuatu in late 2024 due to fears of misuse by criminals and corrupt entities.

A government spokesman confirmed to ABC News that there is a deliberate investigation into Tate's citizenship status. “We do not want to encourage people of questionable backgrounds," said Kiery Manassah, emphasizing the government's commitment to uphold its reputation. The authorities expressed their intent to take action once all necessary files are reviewed.

Tate was granted citizenship in December 2022, coinciding with the month he and his brother Tristan faced arrest in Romania. Currently, they have been largely restricted in their movements within Romania due to ongoing investigations. Notably, Vanuatu lacks a formal extradition agreement with Romania, complicating legal proceedings.

Despite raising concerns over the integrity of their citizenship program, Vanuatu relies on these investments as a significant revenue source. Experts like Aubrey Belford from the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project note that such schemes can facilitate identity changes and law enforcement evasion for individuals with questionable histories.

Not only has Andrew Tate gained notoriety for his troubling remarks about women, but he also boasts a considerable online following, with over 10 million followers on platforms like X. His controversial lifestyle and statements have made headlines around the world, raising ongoing debates about misogyny and its influence on youth culture.

Tate and his brother maintain their innocence against all allegations in Romania, with a UK extradition order pending following corporate charges dating back to incidents between 2012 and 2015. Legal representatives have indicated a willingness for the brothers to return to the UK to contest these charges as they emerge from their Romanian trial.

In exploring this complex landscape, the implications of citizenship investment programs like that of Vanuatu are clear, as governments worldwide reconsider the parameters of legitimacy and safety in granting citizenship in an increasingly interconnected world.
