Surge in Cryptocurrency Kidnappings Sparks Police Action in France

Over 20 arrests made following a wave of abductions targeting crypto entrepreneurs and their families.

French authorities have apprehended 24 individuals in connection with several kidnapping plots against cryptocurrency executives, raising alarms about the safety of those in the industry amidst rising ransom demands.

French police have taken decisive action against a surge in kidnapping attempts involving cryptocurrency entrepreneurs, arresting more than 20 suspects recently. The crackdown follows several alarming incidents, including an attempted abduction in Nantes and a foiled kidnapping of a woman and child in Paris back in May. These events have highlighted growing safety concerns for crypto professionals and their families, often seen as lucrative targets for criminals seeking hefty ransoms.

Earlier this month, Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau pledged to enhance safety measures for France's crypto executives and their loved ones. Reports indicate that a total of 24 individuals have been detained in connection with these cases. Among the more notable incidents was an attempted kidnapping of the daughter and young grandson of Pierre Noizat, co-founder of the Bitcoin exchange platform Paymium, which took place on May 13 in Paris.

In another disturbing case, a man with ties to the cryptocurrency sector narrowly escaped a kidnapping plot, thanks to timely police intervention in the Nantes region. Other serious kidnapping attempts, including the abduction of a father of a crypto millionaire in Paris on May 1, have also made headlines. His kidnappers reportedly demanded a ransom of €5-7 million (£4.2-5.9 million) before his rescue by police days later.

This uptick in violent incidents in the crypto realm follows the kidnapping ordeal of David Balland, Ledger's co-founder, who was abducted alongside his wife at their home in January. After a ransom demand of €10 million, police rescued the couple, though Balland suffered injuries during the ordeal.

In response to these criminal activities, Retailleau convened an emergency meeting with key industry leaders in mid-May to address the issue. He assured that "the entire state apparatus" is mobilized to capture those responsible for these crimes. As the cryptocurrency market continues to grow, so do the risks associated with it, prompting urgent calls for enhanced security measures in this burgeoning sector.
