Police charge a Texas man with stalking following disturbing online threats to the basketball star.
In a startling incident that has shaken the basketball community, 55-year-old Michael Lewis from Texas has been charged with stalking against WNBA superstar Caitlin Clark. Law enforcement apprehended Lewis on Sunday at a hotel in Indianapolis, coincidentally the home city of Clark's team, the Indiana Fever. Authorities reported that Lewis had sent multiple threatening and sexually explicit messages to Clark via social media platform X.
Scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday, Lewis potentially faces up to six years in prison and a fine of $10,000 if convicted. Detailed court documents revealed troubling messages, including one in which Lewis claimed to have been "driving around your house 3x a day," indicating a serious invasion of privacy. Another message reiterated his plans to attend Clark's games while sitting "behind the bench," causing significant concern for the athlete’s safety.
The timeline of the messages spanned from December 16 to January 2. Clark, who is expected to be featured as the 2024 Women’s National Basketball Association Rookie of the Year, promptly reported the online threats to law enforcement, prompting an investigation. Concerned about her own safety, Clark took precautionary measures, including altering her public appearance, as the harassment caused her to feel “terrorized, frightened, intimidated, or threatened.”
ESPN highlighted that Clark alerted authorities about the messages before Lewis arrived in Indianapolis. The FBI traced the messages to Lewis by following the IP addresses, leading to his arrest at a downtown hotel. During questioning, Lewis downplayed the threats, describing his behavior as “an imagination, fantasy type thing” that was not meant to be taken seriously.
Marion County prosecutor Ryan Mears emphasized the importance of supporting victims in such cases, acknowledging the courage it takes for individuals to come forward. “In doing so, the victim is setting an example for all women who deserve to live and work in Indy without the threat of sexual violence,” he stated in a press release.
This incident follows a similar case involving harassment charges against another women's college basketball star, Paige Bueckers, highlighting ongoing issues of stalking and harassment within the world of women’s sports.
