In a desperate call for a reunion, the family of Tom Phillips, who has been on the run with his three children in New Zealand's wilderness for nearly four years, has pleaded for him to come back home. Phillips, who vanished in December 2021 following a dispute with his children's mother, has had no contact with his family since his disappearance. The police have been engaged in a national search for him and his children—Ember, nine, Maverick, 10, and Jayda, 12—believing they may be camping in the western Waikato region.
In a moving message, Phillips' mother expressed her longing for his return, stating, "Everyday I wake up and hope that today will be the day that you all come home." His sister, Rozzi Phillips, remarked on the love and support available to him, adding, "I miss you, and I miss being part of your life, and I really want to see you and the kids." Rozzi suggested her brother, a skilled builder, might be constructing a makeshift shelter in the bush.
The family released a touching handwritten note from their mother, Julia, conveying her sorrow over Tom's choices and underscoring the love they have for him and his children. In the note, she expressed her yearning to be part of their lives again, stating, "It hurts every time I see photos of the children and of you."
Last year, New Zealand police issued an NZ$80,000 reward for information on their whereabouts after occasional sightings of the family, including one by teenagers who filmed them trekking through the bush. In this sighting, Phillips was seen leading his children through the rugged terrain while carrying a firearm. Reports indicate that the children wore masks and carried packs, while their father sported a long beard.
New Zealand authorities have issued a warrant for Phillips, tied to his alleged involvement in a bank robbery, and have warned the public against approaching him, as he is suspected to be armed. The police believe Phillips may be receiving assistance in avoiding capture.
