Family’s Heartache as British Couple Remains Missing After Red Sea Boat Tragedy
The search continues for Jenny Cawson and husband Tariq Sinada, feared lost at sea following a tourist boat sinking in Egypt.
The family of a British couple, Jenny Cawson, 36, and her husband Tariq Sinada, 49, from Devon, is in a state of "desperation" as they await updates on their loved ones, who are among seven individuals missing after their tourist boat sank in the Red Sea. The vessel, named Sea Story, capsized near Marsa Alam early on Monday following a massive wave during severe weather. Michael Williams, Jenny's father, shared his disbelief upon receiving the tragic news, stating, "It’s one of those moments when the world stops."
Frustrations have arisen regarding the UK Foreign Office's level of communication, with the family feeling uninformed about the ongoing search efforts by Egyptian authorities. While the Foreign Office acknowledged providing "support to a number of British nationals and their families," the lack of detailed information has left the family feeling isolated. The Sea Story, which had 31 passengers and 13 crew onboard, was on a five-day voyage when it met disaster. Although 33 survivors were rescued and four bodies recovered, Jenny and Tariq remain unaccounted for.
In a heartbreaking revelation, Michael recounted how Tariq's mother informed them of the boat's sinking. Despite knowing the couple regularly reached out before their trips, the news left Jenny's mother, Pamela, feeling disheartened and compelled to verify its accuracy. Families have sought local assistance in Egypt for updates, but conflicting reports emerged regarding the boat's discovery.
The Egyptian Red Sea Governor has dismissed the notion of a technical fault, asserting that the Sea Story underwent proper inspections before the voyage. While diving enthusiasts from various countries were aboard, including individuals from Belgium, Germany, and the United States, the incident raises concerns about its implications for beach tourism in the region.
Both Jenny, who works for Devon Wildlife Trust, and Tariq, an IT professional, had extensive travel experiences and approached such adventures with care. Pamela reflected on the couple's cautious planning and extensive research, stating, "They are not the type of people who take anything at face value." The search continues for answers and for the safe return of Jenny and Tariq, as their family's heartache deepens amid the uncertainty.
