Caution Advised for Menstrual Cup Users: Health Risks Highlighted

Doctors warn about the potential dangers of ill-fitting menstrual cups following a case of temporary kidney problems due to misalignment.

In light of a recent health issue linked to improperly used menstrual cups, physicians emphasize the importance of correct sizing and positioning to avoid adverse effects.

In a recent warning issued by medical professionals, women using menstrual cups are advised to exercise caution regarding the proper selection and insertion of these reusable feminine hygiene products. A case involving a woman in her 30s who developed temporary kidney complications due to a misaligned menstrual cup has underscored the potential risks associated with improper usage.

According to the British Medical Journal, the patient had been experiencing a range of unsettling symptoms, including intermittent pelvic pain and blood in her urine, without realizing their connection to the menstrual cup she was using. Danish doctors acknowledged that while such occurrences are exceedingly rare, incorrect placement of the cup could exert pressure on the ureters—tubes responsible for transporting urine to the bladder.

"Choosing the correct shape and size of the menstrual cup, along with correct positioning, is vital for safeguarding the upper urinary tract," the doctors emphasized. Given that menstrual cups are often sold without clinical guidance, there's a pressing need for clear patient education about their use.

Menstrual cups, crafted from soft silicone or rubber, offer a sustainable alternative to traditional sanitary pads and tampons. When properly inserted, they can effectively hold between 20 to 30 milliliters—roughly two tablespoons—of menstrual blood and can be emptied, cleaned, and reinserted as needed every four to eight hours.

It's crucial to note that there are a variety of cup models tailored to individual needs, including smaller sizes suitable for younger women or those who have not given birth. However, first-time users often face challenges, particularly in removing the cup. A survey revealed that many young users struggled during their first attempts, with some seeking assistance.

Physiotherapist Dr. Kate Lough, a specialist in pelvic health, educated users that pulling on the cup's stem to remove it can lead to complications. Instead, she recommends squeezing the base to break the suction seal, which can facilitate easier removal. Dr. Lough reassured that when positioned correctly, menstrual cups are generally safe and not noticeable.

With a wide variety of shapes and firmness levels, Dr. Lough encourages women to explore their options to find a cup that fits their unique anatomy. Additionally, women who have recently had a contraceptive coil inserted should be cautious, as there is a rare possibility of the cup dislodging the coil during use.

In contrast, menstrual discs, which are fitted higher in the vaginal canal just below the cervix, are another alternative to consider, highlighting the importance of proper education and support surrounding menstrual products.
