Legendary Choreographer Yuri Grigorovich Passes Away at 98

The maestro of Soviet ballet leaves behind a towering legacy

Yuri Grigorovich, a stalwart of the ballet world, died at the age of 98, leaving a significant mark on the history of dance with his revolutionary productions and choreography.

Yuri Grigorovich, renowned Russian ballet choreographer and a defining figure of 20th-century dance, has passed away at the age of 98. Revered for his gripping productions and artistic vision, Grigorovich served as the artistic director of the Bolshoi Ballet from 1964 until 1995, during which he was known for his authoritative and uncompromising leadership style.

His remarkable works, most notably "Ivan the Terrible," "Romeo and Juliet," and "The Stone Flower," not only redefined Soviet ballet but also introduced an invigorating focus on male performance that required dancers to exhibit extraordinary strength and artistry. Born in 1927, Grigorovich was shaped by the rich traditions of classical ballet, influenced in part by his uncle, Georgy Rozai, who learned from the legendary Vaslav Nijinsky.

His dance journey began as a soloist with the Kirov Ballet in Leningrad before shifting his focus to choreography. However, his tenure at the Bolshoi ended dramatically in 1995 during a significant strike, the theater's first in 200 years, triggered by disputes regarding performer contracts. A notable moment during the strike came when a dancer took the stage to announce the cancellation of a scheduled performance, leaving the audience in stunned disbelief.

Grigorovich's legacy thrived even after the fall of the Soviet Union when he relocated to Krasnodar to establish a new ballet company. Remarkably, he returned to the Bolshoi in 2008 to continue sharing his creative genius as a choreographer and ballet master. Throughout his illustrious career, he earned prestigious accolades, including the titles of People's Artist of the USSR and Hero of Socialist Labour.

On the same day as his passing, Grigorovich's close collaborator, dancer Yuri Vladimirov, also left this world at the age of 83. Valery Gergiev, head of the Bolshoi and Mariinsky theatres, remarked to Izvestia newspaper that Grigorovich's contributions to the realm of dance would be revered and respected for many generations to come.
