A senior Palestinian source has revealed to the BBC that a new ceasefire proposal, crafted by Qatari and Egyptian mediators, aims to establish a truce lasting between five and seven years. This plan includes the release of Israeli hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners and calls for a complete Israeli withdrawal from Gaza. The last ceasefire collapsed just a month ago, leading to resumed hostilities with both sides blaming each other for the breakdown.

New Peace Proposal Aims for Long-Term Ceasefire in Israel-Gaza Conflict
Negotiators from Qatar and Egypt put forward a plan to end hostilities between Israel and Hamas.
A Hamas delegation, including political council leader Mohammed Darwish and chief negotiator Khalil al-Hayya, is set to arrive in Cairo for further discussions. This comes in the wake of recent rejections of Israel’s latest proposal, which aimed for a temporary ceasefire contingent upon disarmament of Hamas. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has stressed that the conflict will not end until Hamas is dismantled and all hostages are returned.
The talks reveal a potential shift, as the Palestinian official noted Hamas is willing to consider governance arrangements for Gaza involving different Palestinian factions, possibly including the West Bank-based Palestinian Authority, despite Netanyahu's stance against the PA's involvement.
While the current mediation efforts are viewed as serious and indicate an unusual level of flexibility from Hamas, significant challenges remain. The conflict, which erupted on October 7, 2023, has already resulted in stark casualties – approximately 1,200 Israelis killed and around 51,240 Palestinians, predominantly civilians. As diplomatic channels are explored, the Palestinian Embassy in Cairo has relocated staff to facilitate ongoing humanitarian efforts and evacuations.
