Easter Truce Announced by Putin in Ukraine Conflict
Russian President's gesture signals potential for renewed peace talks amid ongoing war.
In a recent declaration, Russian President Vladimir V. Putin ordered a temporary halt to military activities against Ukraine, instructing his forces to observe an “Easter truce” from Saturday evening through Sunday. This move appears aimed at demonstrating to the U.S. administration under President Trump that Russia remains open to discussions concerning the cessation of hostilities.
During a televised meeting with his chief military officer, General Valery V. Gerasimov, Putin stated, “We will assume that the Ukrainian side will follow our example,” emphasizing the importance of Ukraine’s reaction as a determinant of its willingness and capacity to partake in peace negotiations.
As of now, Ukraine has not publicly responded to Russia's latest announcement. It’s important to note that this is not the first time Russia has attempted to declare a truce; a similar unilateral cease-fire was proclaimed for the Eastern Orthodox Christmas in January 2023. President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine had previously characterized that announcement as dubious, asserting it was merely a tactic to allow Russian forces to regroup.
The Russian Defense Ministry reinforced Putin’s proclamation, stating that the cease-fire would be upheld “provided that it is mutually observed by the Kyiv regime.” As the situation continues to evolve, it remains unclear if this truce will lead to any substantial progress in peace talks.
