In a significant development, Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) has announced the detention of a man identified as Ignat Kuzi, accused of carrying out a car bomb attack that resulted in the death of General Yaroslav Moskalik. The incident reportedly took place in Balashikha, a suburb of Moscow, on Friday when the general approached a Volkswagen Golf that had been rigged with explosives.
According to the FSB, Kuzi, alleged to be a spy for Ukrainian special services, had planted a homemade explosive device in the vehicle. The bomb was detonated remotely from Ukraine, as noted in the security agency's statements. The 2023 recruitment of Kuzi by Ukraine was highlighted, alongside reports that he drove to the Russian capital in September of the same year.
The Kremlin quickly attributed the attack to Ukrainian terrorist activities, intensifying the ongoing blame game amid heightened hostilities post the 2022 invasion of Ukraine. General Moskalik, who previously represented Russia in negotiations during the 2015 Paris talks tied to the Minsk agreements, has become the latest casualty in the protracted conflict.
While the FSB has released a video of the detained individual appearing to confess to the crime, Ukrainian authorities have yet to respond officially to these claims.
