At least thirteen individuals were injured during a chaotic scene outside the Espanyol-Barcelona match that took place on Thursday evening. The incident occurred shortly before the game, where Barcelona clinched the La Liga title with a 2-0 win over their rival Espanyol.
According to local police reports, four of the injured were transported to the hospital; fortunately, none of them were reported in critical condition. The delay of the match lasted several minutes while authorities addressed the crowd and briefed the referee on the unfolding situation.
Videos circulating on social media depict the vehicle having stopped between trash bins outside the stadium before accelerating into the gathering of fans. The crash happened as devoted Espanyol supporters convened to greet the team's coach ahead of the crucial match.
The driver has since been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving following the incident. In total, ten ambulances were dispatched to the scene to assist those in need. The most severe injury reported was a broken leg.
Catalonia’s Government President, Salvador Illa, who attended the match, commented on the situation, reassuring fans that "it was an accident, some people were injured, but not seriously. There are no major incidents to report," during his interview with the Spanish TV channel Movistar Plus.
